“The Secret Lives of Birds and Beasts”

Clayton, NC artist Lee Mims

Being raised on a farm in Raleigh, North Carolina, created a lifelong love of animals and the “great out doors” for artist, Lee Mims. This love was intensified after she received her Master’s Degree in Geology from the University of North Carolina at Chapel Hill. Lee spent many hours observing the natural world while working as a field geologist for a large mining concern.

Although she had no formal training in art, she was constantly drawing and painting, even as a child. Her painting career began in earnest after she married and moved to a horse farm where she trained horses and often painted their portraits. Soon she moved into painting portraits of people and did that almost exclusively for about twelve years. Feeling the need to express her creativity without the constraints of portraiture, she expanded into animal art and landscapes. While she concentrates mainly on studio work, Lee considers her plein air work both rewarding and relaxing.

An award-winning artist, Lee recently exhibited her work at the North Carolina Museum of Natural Science, the North Carolina Estuarium, and Arts for the Parks in Jackson Hole, Wyoming. Her work can be viewed online at http://www.leemims.com.

If you would like to purchase one of these works of art, please contact Lee Mims at 919.553.3435 or e-mail her at leemims@gmail.com.

Artwork can now be seen at the Frank Creech Art Gallery on the main campus of Johnston Community College, Smithfield, NC.

The JCC Black History Committee presents A Reflection of Negro History Through the Eye of a Lens

A collection of early 19th century Daguerreotypes, Tintypes, Ambrotypes, Cabinet Cards and Carte de Viste’s of African American culture. This is the first private collection to be exhibited in the Frank Creech Gallery and has been a pleasure to share with students and the community. We owe thanks to local attorney, James Craig, for allowing us to showcase his collection. This is an inspiring opportunity. We look forward to sharing it with you.

Spotlight on JCC Fine Art Student

Happy Thursday!

The Frank Creech Art Gallery would like to introduce you to Sam Walter. Sam is currently a JCC Middle College student and JCC Fine Art student who has started working towards his senior project. The great news is that Sam has focused his attention on raising funds for the JCC Fine Art department and the Frank Creech Art Gallery. Sam came to us with this idea and sincerity to give back. Sam’s idea is to have a weekly raffle for artwork that he has gathered from students and local talent. These tickets are $1.00 a piece and the drawing will be each Friday from January until late April. Sam is using social media and word of mouth to get the message out to the community! We are very humbled by his commitment and willingness to make a difference!

If you would like to purchase a ticket, you can contact us here or feel free to stop by the art department and see Mr. Gregory. You can find Sam’s raffle page on Facebook at Sam’s JCC Benefit Raffle.

Our current raffle artwork is a silkscreened poster by Dantanamo Designs. Paul is a past JCC student who is currently printing handmade work for the music industry.

We hope you can support Sam and his efforts!
